Northumberland is a beautiful county with lots to offer, especially for a memorable Mother\u2019s Day outing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For all the mams, the grans, the aunts, the Mother-in-Laws and any mother figures out there who deserve to be celebrated this Mother\u2019s Day, Sunday 15th March 2026.<\/p>\n

Here are some ideas for wonderful places to visit and things to do in Northumberland to celebrate Mothering Sunday.<\/p>\n

1. Indulge in Afternoon Tea<\/h3>\n

Many places in Northumberland offer delectable afternoon teas, especially for Mother\u2019s Day, from castles, boutique hotels to pubs, here are a few of our favourites to choose from.<\/p>\n

The delightful Doxford Hall Hotel, <\/strong>enjoy traditional afternoon tea al fresco if the weather is nice, <\/strong>the impressive medieval Langley Castle,<\/strong> dine in opulent surroundings fit for a Queen, <\/strong>magnificent Matfen Hall,<\/strong> why not relax in the hotel spa afterwards? Sample the classic British cream tea at Eshott Hall <\/strong>, or Beadnell Towers<\/strong> boutique is not to be missed for a memorable and indulgent afternoon.<\/p>\n

2. Treat Mum to a Spa day<\/h3>\n

What better way to say to spend quality time with your Mother than in a subline Spa, relaxing and re energising together. You could combine a luxurious treatment and afternoon tea for a really special treat!<\/p>\n

Mothering Sunday falls just at the perfect time when all the gardens are beginning to come alive.\u00a0 Meander through dazzling array of spring flowers from bright crocuses, golden daffodils, vibrant rhododendrons, and Japanese cherry blossoms in a variety of Northumberland’s gardens.<\/p>\n

Here’s our recommendations for a memorable day out. From the glorious Alnwick Gardens<\/a><\/strong> with their beautiful waterfalls, breath taking Belsey Hall Castle and Gardens<\/a>,<\/strong> the impressive National Trust, Cragside<\/a><\/strong> and its vast network of garden trails, to Howick Hall Gardens<\/a><\/strong> – don’t forget to visit the Earl Grey Tea house where Earl Grey originates, there is something for everyone.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong>\u00a0Barter Books in Alnwick<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If your Mum is a book lover, Barter Books<\/strong> <\/a>in Alnwick is a charming, large second-hand bookstore housed in an old railway station. Grab a coffee and cake or enjoy a relaxed lunch in their caf\u00e9. Sit by the fire afterwards with a book and get lost for a few hours in literary peace.<\/p>\n

Burn off those calories with a wander around the historic cobbled market town of Alnwick. Or a walk round Hulne Park, taking in Alnwick Abbey and Brizlee Tower and o<\/em>ffers fabulous country walks from 4-6 miles in length (please note \u2013 dogs are not allowed in the park).<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Northumberland Coast AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Northumberland coast is perfect for a scenic drive, walking along one of the many amazing white sandy beaches, pay a visit to one of the many mighty castles or sit in the sand dunes and watch the varied wildlife along the coastline. There are delightfully quaint coastal villages like Seahouses<\/a>, Beadnell<\/a>, Bamburgh<\/a>, Alnmouth<\/a><\/strong> to explore, not forgetting Northumbria’s only tidal island, Holy Island<\/a><\/strong> with it’s dramatic Lindisfarne Castle standing proud, this island is not to be missed!<\/p>\n

Special for Mother\u2019s Day:<\/strong> You could pack a picnic if the weather is kind and spend the day at the beach or visit one of the charming coastal cafes with views of the sea.<\/p>\n
