Nestled just outside the quaint village of Allenheads, this charming stone-built cottage offered the perfect blend of historic character and modern comfort. Nestled just outside the quaint village of Allenheads, this charming stone-built cottage offered the perfect blend of historic character and modern comfort. The original features added to the cottage's cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The accommodation was spacious, well-furnished, and incredibly well-equipped. The kitchen had everything we needed and more, with all the utensils and equipment we could ask for. The four-poster double bed was a highlight, offering a comfortable night's sleep, and the multi-fuel stove made the sitting room a perfect place to unwind in the evenings. What really made our stay special, though, was the stunning surroundings. The garden, which runs down to a small stream, was a peaceful haven where we spent many hours enjoying the fresh air and beautiful views. The sound of the stream and the abundance of wildlife made it feel like we were in our own little slice of paradise. The surrounding moorland is simply breathtaking, offering endless opportunities for walks and exploration. The remote location was exactly what we were looking for – peaceful, tranquil, and away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Our dog was also made very welcome, he loved exploring the garden and surrounding area as much as we did. If you're looking for a cozy, character-filled retreat in a stunningly beautiful location, we can't recommend Englewood Cottage highly enough. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed, and already planning our next visit!

“Beautiful location with easy access to attractions, walking/cycling routes and amenities.”

Property was very well equipped and cozy and clean. Lots to read, games provided or dvds to watch if you didn't bring a fire stick... The garden down to the river was an absolute boon to our dog. Shower/bath a little challenging to the fuller figure! Had a glorious stay, highly recommend.

Perfect location for some lovely walks, and local sightseeing (Hadrian's Wall, High Force waterfall), with a cosy coal fire and plenty of DVDs to enjoy in the evenings. Very dog friendly, and everything you need is provided. Will definitely be returning!

“A traditional cottage in a quiet location with lots of local wildlife.”

We counted about 20 rabbits on the bank opposite, grazing sheep across the stream at the bottom of the garden and three pigs next door. The cottage was well stocked with everything we needed, although it took a while to work out the TV and storage heaters. The only things we missed were proper curtains to block out the light in the front bedroom and rails or hooks on the back of the bedroom doors as there was nowhere to hang wet towels. The owners artwork on the walls gave it a nice personal touch.

“Loved the uniqueness of the cottage.”

The owners personal artwork was wonderful. It was decorated beautifully with so many of its original features. We found it lovely and relaxing with the coal burner and lighting in the living space. Settees and bed were super comfy. For us the location wasn’t ideal as we have two medium/large boisterous, young dogs and the outside space was tricky to walk them (out on road at front and shared path at back). One pulls like a train so we had to be careful on the steps to the garden.) There are two friendly pigs and a ram in the garden next door and one of our dogs wasn’t a fan so we couldn’t use the enclosed garden space as lovely as it was. Neighbours were all lovely and friendly and the views around the cottage and trickling water sounds of the little stream below were fab. It was so quiet and peaceful, so if you want to get away from it all to relax then this is a great place to go.

Such a wonderful week enjoying the Autumn colours and breathtaking scenery. My favourite part of the day was leaning on the stable door of the cosy kitchen with a cuppa in the morning. No cars, no planes, just the sound of the fast flowing stream. Just the tonic I needed! Would definitely revisit.

“Lovely period cottage, front of cottage was a steep bank, plenty of rabbits to watch in the morning and the evening munching and playing, better than watching the television, rear of cottage across the communal pathway is the gated rear garden, where we were greeted by a ram next door which is a pet with the next door neighbours.”

Views of the fells. If you like peace and quiet then you are in for a treat, the sparrows are the only noise that you will here in the rear garden, forgot the few sheep on the hill side and that's not normal to hear them. Had a great relaxing time. Walk into Allenheads and there is a cafe "Hemmel" great food at reasonable prices, we enjoyed.

It seemed larger inside than it appeared from the outside! It was very quiet, as expected, and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. The information about local facilities could be updated, as the local pub in Allenheads no longer serves food. And it is 15 miles to Alston, not 7, as listed. But a lovely cottage and location.

“Just lovely.”

It's easy to romanticise over the bleakness of the location and the hardships it would have brought in days gone by but now, it is just perfect for those who want to be close enough for Hadrians Wall, Barnard Castle and High Force yet far enough away to just open the door, be on the moors within a minutes walk and not see a living soul for ages (plenty of sheep though). I believe the house is an old miners cottage with a fabulous fire place and log burner taking centre stage in the front room. Sadly we didn't need to light it as the weather was beautiful yet comfortable indoors as the house was cool due the thickness of the stonework throughout. There is a pub in Allenheads (20-30 min walk) very friendly but they don't do food. The pubs in Allendale do however the one landlady did not appear to be as friendly for some reason but their food was awesome. There are some nice walks around the village but it is definitely worth travelling out for the day as there is lots of National Trust related sites nearby. It is worth noting that the neighbours, Sam and Charlie had a wonderful knack of turning up when we needed advice but apart that you will not get disturbed apart from the occasional bleats and baa's from the other neighbours. As I sat by the brook that runs at the bottom of the garden I imagined that this is the kind of place you would have expected to find William Blake when he wrote the poem "And did those feet in ancient time" Note. Do not be offended; Dogs must be kept on a lead, especially tiny ones like mine that could have easily disappeared down one of the many rabbit holes given the opportunity.

“The location, layout, character and views were even better than expected!”

Particularly loved the walks; literally from the doorstep and the garden, stream, Moor and rescue sheep all just a few steps from the back door. Lovely and cosy inside and lots of books to read; learnt a lot about the local industrial, ecological and social history of the area c/o of local people, very friendly neighbours and the books, maps and DVD's in the cottage. Particularly suited for people who like walking longer distances without seeing many people; you can easily walk for hours from the doorstep, taking in bleak moreland, beautiful hidden streams, waterfalls, woodlands and of course further afield, Hadrian's Wall. “We walked in & we were all like wow!”

! Gorgeous cottage so cosy & warm. The bed was solid which is a rarity with most places the bed is normally too soft & we all go home with bad backs so it was nice. The views were amazing and the walks so many to choose from!! Loved 'high force' & 'slaley forest' great walks for the family & dog!! Weather was rubbish but you can't book that & neighbours so friendly. Booked to come back next summer!!

“The cottage is very cosy & welcoming which was lovely & well stocked with things to do on rainy days!”

My kids didn’t sleep great though as mattresses very lumpy, more like caravan mattress, also the bath has no shower curtain or screen so had to be very careful at bath times!!! Lovely neighbours either side but need to make guests aware that they too have access around & through the property on a daily basis as not very private! Overall though we still enjoyed every minute & Allenhead is breathtaking

“Great, comfy cottage.”

Quirks of an old building. Plenty big enough for the 2 of us and our dogs. Area VERY quiet. Tourist shops shut all around, most places that were open, did not welcome dogs, so not much to do for us. Loads of RnR got! Weather was restricting, but it was not good over all England. To improve cottage further: provide bed linen and towels; provide a welcome pack of eg milk, tea, coffee.

“When we arrived on a chilly evening Englewood Cottage was warm and cosy.”

It was beautifully decorated with some lovely period features and very well equipped, especially the kitchen. The rooms were light and airy and generously sized for a former miners Cottage, so there was plenty of room for 3 adults and a medium sized dog. Those neighbours we met were friendly and welcoming. Location wise, the Cottage is on a quiet road in a village with an interesting industrial history, and a pleasant pub. It overlooks open moorland, so is perfect for a peaceful holiday with gentle strolls along the river or more challenging hikes along footpaths over the moors from the door. There was plenty of choice for walking a short drive away with a National Trust site and a RSPB reserve in the area. Hadrian’s Wall was within easy reach and the nearest town, Hexham, had a good selection of shops and a couple of large supermarkets. We loved the Cottage and the neighbours we met were friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed some great walks during the week and therefore highly recommend it to anyone who wants a characterful base from which to explore the beautiful North Pennines with their dog.

“Wow! What a fabulous cottage and what an amazing area to stay in.”

It is only an hour's drive from Newcastle but it feels like being in another world. We so appreciated the peace and quiet and the beautiful countryside which is right on the doorstep. It provided us with a wonderful opportunity to escape the usual busy ness of life. The cottage itself is delightfully presented and was lovely and warm. It is one of the best cottages I have stayed in. I loved every minute and was sad to have to leave!

“We booked Englewood Cottage at short notice so didn't have a great deal of choice but were delighted with the cottage - a real little gem.”

I was glad I knew about the garden being across a little alley way in advance - it helped plan things with the dogs but it really wasn't a problem. And the access from the bottom of the garden to the stream was delightful. The cottage was very attractive internally - a lovely 4 poster bed in the large master bedroom - probably the comfiest bed I've ever had in a holiday let. We didn't use the twin bedroom but it was also large and airy. The kitchen was remarkably well equipped (I don't have 4 different choices of pudding bowl at home!!). And the living room was comfortable and cosy. Lovely to have the stove available but the storage heater kept us plenty warm enough so we didn't light the fire although coal was available had we wanted to. We were concerned that parking in the road would be problematic in a terrace of houses but it wasn't at all - we were out every day and were always able to park right outside the house. Cannot find anything that could have been improved. Thoroughly recommended.

“Very cosy and characteristic terraced cottage, we got there just as "mini beast from the east" hit so many of the activities we wanted to do was impossible, this did not detract from the cottage positivity but frustrated us a bit !”

I would suggest the owner leaves operating instructions for the tv system ,we couldn't get it to work and after ringing owner got help from next door neighbour. I do think considering the weather that 2 logs and 1 bucket of coal is a bit mean as a start up pack !! overall the actual cottage and location was brilliant and a great chillout experience

The cottage was really comfortable from the seating to the beds and very cosy. The only down side was that a lot of windows couldn't be opened, notably the back bedroom. Loved the stable door though. It was one of our best holidays in the last years. We had seen many places in this beautiful countryside: Hadrians Wall, castles, High and Low Forces, Lake District, Stone Circles, Bond Museum (that was for Dad), Galloway Mountains, Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter), St. Mary Lighthouse, Edinburgh, Gretna Green, steam engine in Alston. It was fantastic! The cottage is a lovely accommodation. We and our kids love this place!

The property

A charming, stone-built, terraced cottage situated in a wonderful position just outside the village of Allenheads. The cottage dates back to 1854 and much of the original charm and character has been retained. The spacious accommodation is very well equipped and furnished. The cottage is surrounded by spectacular moorland and boasts a garden which runs down to a small stream. The garden is accessible to the rear of the property, where there is a shared pathway running between the property and the private garden.

Allendale Town 7 miles; Hexham 18 miles.

The village of Allenheads is situated in the heart of the North Pennines in beautiful Allendale. Allenheads is reputed to be one of the highest villages in England and stands over 1,400ft above sea level. The dale was once an important lead-mining area and there is an interesting display of former life in the village in the Allenheads Heritage Centre and blacksmiths shop. The village is surrounded by wonderful heather-clad moorland making the whole area an ideal place for walkers and lovers of country life. The award-winning Killhope Lead Mining Centre, the fascinating city of Durham, Beamish Open Air Museum, Hadrian’s Wall and the attractive market towns of Allendale Town, Alston and Hexham are all within easy driving distance.
