Sarah the owner is lovely, greeted us on arrival and was very helpful and made us feel so welcome from the time we arrived until the day we left. We had a wonderful time at Townfoot Cottage, so relaxing and did not want to leave, it is a little Gem in a lovely location with walks straight from the doorstep. We definitely will return. The host (Sarah) is exceptionally friendly: she provided wine and chocolate upon arrival, and gave suggestions for things to do. When Babet was unfortunately hitting the area, she made sure to pass on recommendations and websites to check, so we’d stay safe. We very much enjoyed staying in Townfoot Cottage and seeing so much of Northumberland’s heritage.

The cottage is well proportioned with plenty of storage space and a secure back garden where our dog was free to totter. We would love to visit again in the summer and experience the garden and surrounding area in full bloom. Whatever the weather, this is a fabulous wee place just to get away from it all and Linda could not have been more welcoming - we arrived to chocolates, wine and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree - it was perfect!

“After a very long drive, the cottage was a welcome sight.”

The owner was there to meet us and demonstrate the quirky light switches. The wine and chocolates were a nice touch plus tea, milk and coffee available. Very comfortable sofas to sink into whilst discussing the days activities and planning the next. Local pub was a good location close to the cottage however due to staff shortage not always able to provide food, however when it did it was good. Back to the cottage review, you had everything available to make the stay like being at home, effort had been taken by owner to make it a stress free holiday. Very quiet location however the locals very friendly and would offer info about the area. The cottage could not be faulted we would like to thank the host for the effort taken to ensure all went well.

Lovely location on the edge of a small village, with a nearby village pub which also serves food. A very quiet and peaceful location. Easy off road parking for cars and an enclosed back garden which enabled our two dogs to wander out there safely and unsupervised. Well placed for driving out to visit lots of Northumberland’s many attractive rural locations such as Kielder Water and National Trust properties.

We travelled as a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children). The cottage provided everything we needed and the rooms were comfortable and the triple room for the children was a real bonus. Sarah was there to welcome us on arrival and a little welcome gift of chocolates and wine was really thoughtful. The cottage was well maintained and very clean on arrival and was the perfect base to explore the coastline of Northumberland and also the beauty of the surrounding national park, Keilder forest and waterfall walks. We would highly recommend this cottage and hope to return in the future

It was very peaceful and quiet and the cottage felt like being at home. It was very comfortable and it was lovely to arrive to find chocolates and a bottle of wine on the dining table. The cottage has every facility you would require, it is very clean and the village very picturesque, we didn't get the chance to try the pub because of Covid regulations but it is only a 5 min walk from the cottage. There is a nice sit out cafe called the Impromptu cafe which serves a nice cup of tea and snacks. The area is absolutely stunning and is great for walking and cycling. Sarah the owner was waiting to greet us and she couldn't do enough to make sure we settled in well. Thank you Sarah, we will DEFINITELY be back to Townfoot Cottage

Chocolates, wine and even biscuits for the dogs on arrival. Back garden is small but totally enclosed for the dogs’ safety and extremely private - plus lots of birds if you keep bird feeders filled up! We have been booking holiday cottages in the UK twice a year for 20+ years. We both think this is in our top 3 anywhere in country. We often say it would be nice to return but then usually try somewhere else. This is less than 3 hours easy drive from home so really do hope to make more trips here in the future. Will be a great “home from home” for a 2 or 3 night stay to recharge the batteries! Thank you so much Sarah - we WILL be back!

“Well what a fantastic cottage in a lovely rural village like Elsdon and what a lovely person (Sarah) who owned the property and lived next door not only did she greet us on arrival but when we went inside she had left us a bottle of wine,a bag or Choi’s and also made us some homemade Scones with jam and Clotted cream which we have not had before and we’re the best Scones ever (thank you Sarah).”

If you get chance check out the local pub 2 mins walk with a micro brewery out the back of the pub(very good beer) and the Landlord is a great and friendly bloke so will definitely be going back.

“A delightful and beautiful house.”

We very much enjoyed staying there. The owner was perfect - friendly and available if needed but never intrusive. The village is very quiet with one pub (with a restaurant) open just three days a week. But this didn't matter. The house is very well situated for day trips and walks. Hardian's wall and Vindolanda are near by and the drive there on the switchback roman roads was part of the experience. Nearby is Rothbury with a nature reserve on the way where we walked beside the lake to see the birds - and particularly hear the calls, and even feel the down draft from wings as they flew overhead. Further afield was Alnwick with a truly magnificent contemporary garden. We also went to Lindisfarne and down the coast to Alnmouth and Amble (a beautiful and wild coastline). All in all - highly recommended.

The property

A delightful Grade II listed property, in a wonderful peaceful setting, on the edge of the village of Elsdon. Townfoot Cottage adjoins the owner's farmhouse and was originally an old farm cow byre. Decorated, equipped and furnished to very high standards throughout, the cottage has retained much character with rugs over stone flagged and wooden floors. The bathroom has an L-shaped shower bath, offering the best of both - a proper shower with glass hinged shower door, and a spacious deep bath for long hot soaks after a days walking. A tall chrome towel radiator keeps the room toasty warm. The cottage enjoys views over Elsdon Burn towards the hills beyond, and is excellently situated for enjoying a variety of walks, including Hadrian's Wall, coastal paths and the Cheviot and Simonside hills. Boasting lots of activities for the outdoors enthusiasts to enjoy, the area is great for watersports and fishing. Also secure storage is available for those bringing bikes on which to explore this lovely part of the world and enjoy the many cycle routes and mountain biking trails in the area. A warm and comfortable retreat from which to discover this ancient and fascinating area. Elsdon’s pub, the ‘Bird in Bush’ is only five minutes’ walk away and is right on the village green. It is open most days for food and drink.

Otterburn 2 miles; Rothbury 10 miles.

Set in the heart of the Cheviots, on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, the unspoilt village of Elsdon lies in a sheltered hollow amidst beautiful fells, rolling moorland and woodlands. The area is steeped in history, and has numerous listed sites within the Parish, dominated by the fortified Pele Tower. The village of Elsdon has been described as the perfect Northumbrian village, with an ancient parish church, an extensive village green and the remains of a Motte and Bailey Castle, as well as the famous gibbet at the summit of Gallow Hill, with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. There are several pubs within a 15-minutes drive of the cottage, including The Redesdale Arms, a 16th century coaching inn known locally as the 'First and Last' Inn on the way to Scotland. There is a good range of shops in the small but attractive market town of Rothbury within easy driving distance, and with the National Cycle Route (No 68) running close by, this is spectacular walking and cycling country. A peaceful area full of interest to explore!
