    “A Beautiful cottage,lovely+remote.”

    Interesting history of the origional Shepherds cottage.The lake is wonderful+all equiptment readily available.Well equipt inside,comfortable + cosy(My visit was the second week in March) open fire+plenty fuel.I am disabled+this was my first adventure on my own to see if I could do it.The only problem I ran into was the need for electricity for my CPAP machine,I had taken my own solar generator but sadly it was overcast+I couldn't recharge it when I ran out.A wonderful place + I will definately ...

The property

.Roughley Cottage is a traditional off grid shepherd's cottage which situated in a wonderful location overlooking Hermitage Castle and the Cheviot Hills. It is near Newcastleton (6 miles) and approached along a mile of farm track offering complete privacy and seclusion. There is no mains electricity but solar panels and a windmill provide electricity for LED lighting and gas for refrigeration and oven. The cottage is fairly basic but cosy and comfortable with rustic charm. However, with walks and wildlife on the doorstep and a well-stocked brown trout loch with seating area nearby it makes a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern day living. Otters can be seen on the loch. GROUND FLOOR Living/dining room with open range fire. Kitchen/larder with gas cooker and small fridge. Bathroom with bath, over shower, WC, basin. Bedroom 1 with king size bed.. FIRST FLOOR Bedroom 2 with 2 single beds, Victorian fireplace and central hetaing.. Bedroom 3 with 2 single beds, Victorian fireplace and central heating. OTHER FACILITIES Unlimited space for walking and bird watching. Ample parking. All gas and coal included in rent. All linen and towels included in the rent. Dogs to be kept under control as sheep rearing area. 2 canoes and life vest provided, used at your own risk. Fishing is £60 per rod per week from March to October (rod not included T&C apply). Private spring water supply (filtered). Please be aware there is a ravine 75 yards away which is a hazard for small children. In the Winter months it may be advisable to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to access the property in bad weather. or if snow is forecast.

NEWCASTLETON

Hawick 21 miles; Carlisle 24 miles.

The village of Newcastleton, sits just a few miles from the border of Scotland with England, in the Liddesdale Valley. It was founded in 1793 by the Duke of Buccleuch ('Buckloo’) and is also known as Copshaw Holm, or The Holm. Founded to create a centre for the weaving trade in the area, over time, Newcastleton attracted other trades including farmers, carpenters and shoe makers. Further development occurred with the arrival of the railway in the late 1800s, when the famous Waverley Line journeyed from Edinburgh to Carlisle. Historically a region of strife dating from the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century, the subsequent Norman invasion and the cross border battles between English and Scots, Liddesdale is at the centre of what was known as The Debatable Lands. The village today is little changed, and is famous for the nearby Hermitage Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots met her secret lover the 4th Earl of Boswell, and the ruin offers an imposing and spectacular sight filled with intrigue. The village is also popular with tourists due to its range of outdoor activities, which include mountain biking on the 7stanes trails, fishing, walking, wildlife watching, and an outdoor adventure centre. A vibrant and exciting holiday destination for all the family.
