Berwick-upon-Tweed & Area
Bridging the border
Changing hands no less than 14 times in 300 years, visitors will see why the English and Scots fought so hard over Berwick-upon-Tweed. It's set on the north shore of the River Tweed and the massive curtain walls and gateways encircling the town are unique in Britain. Three bridges span the river, the most eye catching is the Royal Border Railway Bridge with its tall, slender arches.
With many restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, train station and theatre - it's a bustling border town. The surrounding area is an ornithologist’s delight and an abundance of wildlife such as otters can be seen along the river. Berwick is well served for golf enthusiasts with 3 links courses close to each other. The picturesque villages of Norham and Paxton are all nearby and touring the Scottish Borders is easy with Edinburgh only 50 minutes away by train.
