Holy Island & Area
An impressive hideaway
The tranquil beauty of Holy Island has made it a sanctuary enjoyed since antiquity. Still a place of pilgrimage it was here that St. Aidan founded the monastery where early Christians crafted their message. Standing on a rocky outcrop overlooking the island is Lindisfarne Castle and within the village is Lindisfarne Priory, once home to St Cuthbert and the Lindisfarne Gospels.
The island is joined to the mainland by a tidal causeway covered twice a day by the sea making the island completely secluded. So always remember to check the tides before venturing on or off the island. The island has a selection of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. Pilgrims of a different type also travel across the causeway to see another of its treasures. Holy Island is one of the top bird watching sites in Britain and is home to Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve.
