“This was a nice cottage in a great location.”

Parking wasn’t great as you only have 2 hours outside the property. I appreciate it is not far to walk to the other car park but didn’t feel totally comfortable leaving my car there. The facilities were good and functional and both showers really good. The mattress in the main bedroom was very badly stained and this did put me off quite a bit! The pillows and duvets could also do with a refresh. We didn’t see the two bins by the side of the house and (wrongly) assumed our two bins were outside the garage opposite. Unfortunately, the rather irate octogenarian put us in our place which was a tad uncomfortable. Perhaps a little note in the visitors book could clarify this - especially if you are not observant like ourselves! Overall, this was a pleasant stay and thank you for the generous amount of logs for the fire.

“Bastle House is in a perfect location for all amenities.”

The train station is 0.2 miles down the road. Plus, the main street has a couple of bus stops with a regular bus service. There are shops and takeaways plus a couple of chippies, one nearly opposite with a portion big enough to feed two or three! Having eaten too much there is a medical walk-in centre nearby! Best of all is the Manor House Inn 2 doors away. Great food and drink,on Tuesdays and Thursdays they have a 2 course special. The Black Bull Inn is just off the town square and worth a visit. The house itself is well equipped with 3 double bedrooms, one with en-suite. A shaving mirror and bath mat would have helped in there, plus a bed throw for the thin quilt. In the master bedroom was a large comfy bed but let down by uncomfortable bedding. Way too hot for mild nights. Also the main street was lit all night so it would be helpful if the room was fitted with a blackout blind or curtains. In the lounge the handsome 3 seater sofa was desperately uncomfortable. Furthermore,the 2 plugs located near the window in the master bedroom need to be switched on for the lounge TV to work. All in all, it is a great house in a great location and would happily stay again.

“We stayed for a last minute Christmas break and had a lovely time.”

The cottage has really good facilities the beds are very comfy and for a 16th century cottage the renovation has been done to a good standard balancing old and new. Whilst other listing mention the lack of parking being literally a 2 minute walk to the council owned so free car park was not too much of a hassle. The location is great for walks from the door and the town centre has all you could need including 5 pubs and 2 supermarkets. We would definitely come back and hopefully in better weather.

The bedrooms were so comfy and the bathroom so lovely for a soak in the bath after a long days walking. Everything was just stunning and we will def be back The kitchen and the living room were fab and we loved the log burner which made the house so cozy at night-it was nice and warm and couldnt fault a thing Only slightly negative thing was parking outside the house was limited to 2 hours but we parked in the sainsburys carpark overnight which is council owned and just fetched the car up when we packed the car back up after our stay which wasnt too much of a problem Adam the host was very helpful and extremely quick to respond to our texts when i sent questions . We really enjoyed the house and Haltwhistle was a lovely sleepy town-can recommend the manor House inn for evening meals and Jerichos cafe for breakfast and cakes

Only thing we didn't like much was the rear of the cottage for letting our dogs out as outside light wasn't working and no torch provided we used our phone torch.we would book again.

Spotless and excellent equipment.The reason for docking a star was the outside having two dogs who are used to a garden .As well as walking them three times a day which I enjoyed They kept sitting by the door so I had to keep taking them out just in case they never wanted to do anything just wanted to be out,A small fence on top of the wall and a gate would have made everything perfect .

“Really enjoyable weekend.”

Town lovely, people salt of the earth, friendly and welcoming. Close to Hadrians Wall. Living in the North East and never seeing Hadrians Wall until this weekend at the age of 54 ( a little ashamed about that especially when I met a man from Texas on the wall who had got there before me LOL) belated but a lovely experience. About 5 miles round trip. I walk lots with my dogs but I am not a walker. You do not need to be. It is a beautiful walk up through the burn across the military road and a couple of fields and you are at the wall. You then feel that you are on top of not one world but two, the Romans might have thought the same. Bastle House is lovely accommodation. Nice decor and very homely. Built as a safe house, that is what it felt like, solid and dependable. Thank You for the opportunity to enjoy this lovely property

“It's a great property and is well located, Our stay was somewhat spoilt by building work in an adjacent property which commenced at an alarming 7am.”

Not ideal if you are on holiday and enjoy a lay-in. The presence of tea towels, a couple of dishwasher and washing machine tabs in addition to fresh milk / bread would also have been nice, although there was a bottle of wine in the fridge.

“Fantastic cottage in a really lovely location.”

Central to Hadrians wall which we wanted to explore. Liked the way owner had lots of Hsdrians wall pictures it really set the scene. Lovely beds i didn't want to get up. The only minor criticism I have is that whoever does the cleaning needs to give a bit of attention to cobwebs and the bins. Everything else was perfect.

“The cottage was roomy and light.”

The master bedroom was especially large with a superking sized bed. We loved the log burning stove, the fire was laid ready to light when we arrived. There were two family eating areas, one of which was a quirky area just off the kitchen which I really liked. The cottage was perfectly placed in the centre of town and a short drive to all the best parts of Hadrians wall and near by Roman forts. We had a great time, thank you.

We had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Parking was not an issue lots of places nearby. Haltwhistle is a lovely town and great for exploring the surrounding countryside and Hadrian’s Wall. Nice pubs to visit all dog friendly. The courtyard (small patio) was disappointing not really suitable for letting your dogs out as it’s not private or enclosed, there are nearby areas to walk. Thankyou.

“The toilet seat was loose and the radiator next to it was covered in dirt which was unpleasant.”

The main bedroom duvet was badly stained when I took off the bed linen. There were not enough oven sheets or oven ware to enable us to cook. We had to buy some metal disposable ones. Otherwise it is a delightful cottage nicely situated for the Wall

“What a little gem Bastle House is.”

Very friendly host, met us on arrival and didn't mind our slightly delayed arrival (due to M6 traffic). The cottage is very cosy but feels spacious and is well proportioned. Excellent cooker but also 3 pubs 2 chip shops a chinese and an indian takeaway, a deli and Sainsburys that are all within 5 mins walk. Halt whistle was a fabulous base to explore Hadrians Wall and the surrounding area. We had a wonderful time and would revisit again in a heart beat. Top holiday home..Thank you

The welcome pack was an exceptionally kind and useful gesture particularly as we arrived late Saturday evening. Haltwhistle is geographically well placed for those doing the Hadrians Wall Walk. Additionally the very friendly town has everything one needs to help you to enjoy your stay. I would especially commend The Black Bull pub, the Coop and the Sainsbury’s supermarkets. We shall certainly be back and happily recommend this outstanding accommodation to anyone looking for something special.

“This was a great location to visit Hadrian's Wall and the various archaeological sites.”

The village of Haltwhistle was lovely - a friendly place with all amenities to hand and numerous eating options. There was ample parking close by. There was no garden to speak of, but given the glorious countryside around, that was not an issue. The house itself was comfortable (once we'd figured out the heating) and generally well-equipped, although kitchen utensils could do with a review and a lock on the bathroom door would be helpful. Overall though, we were very happy.

“An historic building in the centre of Haltwhistle with plenty of amenities and parking nearby.”

Convenient for both east and west coast access, and a great location for walking holidays and visiting Hadrian's Wall with its associated attractions. Catch the train to Newcastle or Carlisle from the station 10 minutes walk away. The cottage is clean and comfortable although as a tall person I did find the bed uncomfortable as it is a standard double and I was unable to stretch out, which meant we had to use the spare room too. The welcome pack was a nice gesture and appreciated. It was a nice change to stay in the centre of town with all the amenities and facilities on the doorstep, and I would recommend this cottage to anyone visiting the area who is after peace and quiet combined with convenience.

Hadrian's wall is only a short distance away, and the Vindalanda site is well worth a visit. The local pubs are friendly and The meals good. The Centre if Britain hotel does a lovely 2 or 3 course fixed price menu that was delicious and reasonably priced.

We really appreciated the welcome pack, and as we had no car, we were grateful for the top up of logs. The location was great for us, and the town had every facility on the door step. The people were so friendly. We did several long walks around Haltwhistle and the scenery was spectacular ( from and around Hadrian’s Wall). The public transport was very reliable and regular, so we didn’t miss our car at all. We loved the history everywhere and would recommend Hexham Abbey, (the market too was great on a Tuesday) Vindolanda, Housesteads and the evidence of Roman settlements was fascinating onthe walks. We also loved a day trip to Edinburgh on the train. Bastle House was such a cosy house to stay in and the old pub nearby was great in the evening too. Thank you to everyone who made our week so special.

The house was great, comfy living room area and dining table. Very large kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine if you need it, then two great double rooms and a twin. The bathroom has both a shower and bath. It's about a 2 minute walk from a large Sainsburys with free parking, so very handy. We'd definitely recommend anyone it to anyone who is thinking of staying there.

The cottage is gorgeous and full of character. Adam left us a bottle of wine, a chocolate cake and pint of milk in the fridge which was a lovely gesture. We had a fabulous holiday and would definitely recommend this cottage. The chip shop across the road served the best chips we have ever tasted and the Red Fort India was also amazing.

“Bastle House in Haltwhistle is a great place to spend some down time.”

The house is an old building full of character with crazily thick walls, ceiling beams but still with all of the things you will need for your stay. The decor is great with suggestions of local history and places of interest. We spent a week there in August in 2018 and four adults were very comfortable there and enjoyed a log fire one evening. Haltwhistle is a lovely country town with local shops and supermarkets near by. It's very handy for exploring Hadrian's Wall and is local to many interesting villages. We would really recommend Bastle House if you want to relax and put your feet up or explore Northumberland.

“What a wonderful week we had!”

The cottage is superb, well equipped and very comfortable, and although quite central on the main street, we never had any problem with noise. The town itself is not huge, but well serviced with two supermarkets, pharmacy, cafes, takeaways and several shops and the wonderful Black Bull pub which offers pub food, but VERY GOOD pub food, and a wonderful atmosphere. Haltwhistle is perfectly located for walking or cycling in the wonderful countryside adjacent to Hadrian's Wall, or touring by car or motorcycle in the North Pennines and Northumberland National Park and a little further to Northumberland Coast, Yorkshire Dales and The Lakes. All in all one of the best holidays we've had in years!

It has been sympathetically updated so it has all mod cons. It is located in the centre of Haltwhistle which has all the shops, pubs and public transport you need. The locals are very friendly. It also has many fantastic walks that you can access from the house - you can even walk to Hadrian's Wall. It is the perfect base for a holiday.

C. would not have gone amiss, ( having said that it is an older property and was not built with one and it would now spoil the authenticity of the property). It is in the heart of Haltwhistle and within a couple of minutes walk of the Co-op and Sainsbury's supermarkets, as well as Boots the chemist and other assorted shops. There are several pubs within striking distance of the house as well as a working mans club that made us honorary members as we we staying at Bastle House. We loved it and would very happily stay there again; it could be described very succinctly as "what a find"!

“Beautiful house.”

Warm and very comfortable. Lovely big log burner to relax in front of after lots of beautiful walks close by. The kitchen was stocked with tea coffee milk and a luxury chocolate cake which went down well. The house was everything we expected from the reviews we had read. The town has lovely shops and The Black Bull is warm and dog friendly. Parking is an issue but we found we were able to park in Sainsburys car park without any problems. We had a wonderful holiday and would happily recommend Bastle House to stay in?

Set in the heart of the charming Northumberland town of Haltwhistle, this lovely end-terrace cottage is conveniently located near a selection of shops, pubs and restaurants, and provides a perfect base for a family break. Guests will be delighted with the well-equipped kitchen and cosy sitting room with original beams, woodburner and dining area. Upstairs, you’ll find three comfortable bedrooms and a family bathroom with bath and separate shower, and outside is a small courtyard space with garden furniture. Nestled in the heart of Hadrian's Wall Country, which offers excellent walking and fishing, there is also fishing available on the North Tyne, two minutes’ walk from the property, along with Vindolanda, a fascinating Roman fort lying to the south of Hadrian's Wall. With easy access to the majestic castles and sweeping beaches of the Heritage Coast, or the gardens and castle at Alnwick, Bastle House is a very well-placed base for a family holiday.

Please note the twin bedroom bed will be changed to a small double bed from March 2022 so more suitable for 5 people total.

HALTWHISTLE

Hexham 17 miles.

Known as the 'Centre of Britain', this small market town is a great place from which to explore both Northumberland and Cumbria. Haltwhistle boasts a good range of shops and pubs - one of which, The Black Bull, is a real ale pub serving good food! There is an excellent leisure centre with heated open air swimming pool and cycle hire in the town, with pony trekking nearby. One of the best preserved stretches of Hadrian's Wall is only a mile to the north with various museums, forts and milecastles to be seen. There is even an ongoing 'dig' at the nearby site of Vindolanda. This truly is magnificent walking, riding and cycling country, with the Pennine Way and various bridleways and cycle routes passing rivers, forests, castles and of course, Hadrian's Wall. Visitors will enjoy this location in all weather and all seasons – a regular train and bus service from the town to Newcastle, The Metro Centre and Carlisle, means that you can leave the car behind and enjoy!
