“Lovely warm and cosy cottage with good facilities, everything you need is on site.”

Plenty of room in the master bedroom for a travel cot and dog bed as we had both. Walking distance to town centre with shops and pubs and short drive/long walk to Hadrians Wall. Drive a bit tight to get in and out of but easier parking just up the lane and if you have a dog that wants to escape beware of the gap between the hedge and gate but can be blocked off with a wheelie bin. Little bit of mould in a couple of rooms and kitchen tap leaks if you aren’t very delicate with it when turning ...

Haltwhistle is a lovely wee town but unfortunately seems to have a problem with people not picking up after their dogs (the week we were staying at least), the only drawback to a great place to visit or stay. Overall a great cottage in a nice town and wider area- would definitely stay again, considering coming back in spring/summer to enjoy the longer daylight hours in the area. Thank you.

“The cottage is situated in a beautiful area, but unfortunately the cottage itself did not reflect this.”

It could do with some tlc, in terms of cleaning, decoration and furnishings. All looking very tired and worn...e.g carpets, skirting boards. Information about the cottage and accessibility could do with updating. On the plus side, the river walk and woodland is lovely and right outside the cottage. Haltwhistle town is charming and good for amenities. Surrounded by ANOB countryside. Near Hadrians Wall and other towns.

“We had a fabulous stay!”

! The cottage had everything we needed plus more and it was so cosy and comfortable. Great shower and we had the best weeks sleep we've had in a long time. Its great to be able to walk into Haltwhistle and enjoy pub grub and a few drinks without having to take the car. Our dog Cooper loved the river at the bottom of the garden which kept his amused for ages. We have come home refreshed and will definitely book again as its such good value for money!!

“Excellent location, handy for the railway station and the bus stops.”

Cottage was warm, plentiful hot water and bath towels. Fridge could with a label on the switch as I accidentally switched it off one day. Local pubs and shops very friendly. Lovely walks from the door. Garden very restful after a day out weather permitting. WiFi was very good. Only change perhaps would b the lighting in the front room was good but not great for reading, the lamp was excellent perhaps another positioned for anyone sitting on the sofa? We had a great week. (We didn't use the oven or microwave, either eating out, takeaway one night, or salads )

“Disappointed, looks far better in photos than real life.”

Lovely wee cottage in great location but cottage needs a very deep clean and needs upgraded throughout. No welcome pack, no basic cleaning products in kitchen, we bought and left them, also had to buy pegs to hang washing out as the washing machine is not a dryer as in description. Carpets upstairs badly stained and bed very rickety, towels stained and threadbare. Lovely garden to sit in and great having onsite parking but pile of rubble outside front door. The cottage is on a very busy road which seems to be the local racetrack . Overall disappointed with cleanliness and facilities at the cottage but still had a great holiday.

thank you so much for the feedback, however, this cottage was deep cleaned on the 16th August, & my fault I left the fridge until last then realised someone had left the freezer door ajar - at that point, I did hav3e guests incoming, so just had to scrape Ice off as best I could. - it is difficult with same day turnarounds .. There was at least 2 x bottles of washing up liquid, under the sink along with, a srubber/sponge, a dishcloth & 2 x dishwasher tablets & a dishwasher bowl. Also, flyspray a first aid kit, a shoeshine kit and a box of pegs. the washer is a dryer as well and ther instructions were in the welcome file. As we encourage dogs to the cottages & not sure if had one, there is always a dog bol in the kitchen with dog towels underneath - could these be the towels that are threadbare? There is also a large cupboard in the front bedroom with spare bedding & a huge supply of fresh towels as well as a vacuum, a fan |& a spare heater - juist in case.. So sorry you were disappointed, but we do try our best to address everything but occasionally with a same day turnaround something could be missed. “It’s well equipped and has the potential to be a really nice cottage, but unfortunately it’s not very clean!”

I appreciate you get what you pay for, but this place needs a really good clean especially the big stains in the upstairs carpets. On our arrival the dining table was filthy, which isn’t a very good first impression. The main bedroom’s bed was uncomfortable so we chose to sleep in the back bedroom. The small fridge has an ice box which needs defrosting, as it was practically solid with ice, I could go on but in summary it just needs some TLC. The only plus side really is the location.

Good evening, thank you so much for your feedback, but I do question it - Myself & my trusty cleaner were at Hollie Cottage on Sat 16th August & we did the clean as Jess our normal cleaner was on holiday. I cleaned every cupboard in the kitchen & dishwashed every item of cuttlery/crockery & pans myself. I cleaned the fridge - & tried to defrost it (obviously - I should have attempted this first but as you were arriving the same day- I did do the best I could - the previous guests had left the freezer door ajar ... so this is my fault, I should have found it earlier! I cannot understand how the dining room table was filthy as I watched T clean it after I had folded all the towels on the table, after I had sorted the books/games etc on the shelves. The cottage is tiny - so in my opinion the fridge could not be muich larger. The bed has an extremely expensive mattress & most peoiple LOVE it... We did spend over 4 hours doing the very comprehensive clean - replacing missing glasses, cutlery etc etc., Granted we did miss the stains on the carpet , although it was thoroughly vacuumed. So sorry your first impression was that of a filthy dining table - I know it is glass & does mark very easily, but after folding towels on it I didn't notice it was filthy - I can only admit old age eyesite..... Loved sitting in the garden with a lovely view and sound of the brook. The walk into town wasn’t far but it’s uphill and as I have mobility problems we always took the car. Would and probably will return in the future. Thank you so much

“A cosy comfortable cottage with the burn right outside the gate , ideal base for us and our dog .”

We enjoyed our stay and would use the property again. However we feel the cottage needs a little bit of TLC and a new kitchen tap which sprays every were . Haltwhistle is a lovely friendly place, we would recommend the Manor Inn for good food especially the steak pie also the Brew bar for lovely coffees and cakes .

“Having just returned from our weeks stay at Hollie Cottage I don't understand the almost hate and vitriol from the 2 previous reviewers.”

On arrival we found a spotlessly clean cottage, well equipped kitchen, comfortable furnishings and comfortable bedrooms. The garden area was perfect for our pooch and big enough to fit our very large estate car in. All in all a perfect cottage for us in a beautiful area, only 5/10 minute walk to the centre of Haltwhistle with its shops pubs and takeaways and stunning walks on the doorstep. The previous reviewers must be expecting a champagne cottage for lemonade money and I would advise anyone looking to book this cottage to disregard these reviews. “Positives Bed in back bedroom was comfortable Negative Cold, dark cottage, the most uncomfortable furniture it has ever been my misfortune to sit on.”

Bathroom sink tiny and does not hold water, towels plentiful but old, thin and stained Had the weather been bad I would have gone home on Saturday, however the surrounding countryside offered many walks and places to visit, the weather was glorious so this uncomfortable little cottage was simply used to sleep in

Really at a loss as to understand your feedback, the towels are regularlyinspected & if have been stained, usually by hair dye/false tan, we the mark them as use for dog towels. The large green recliner chair in leather is a joy & the sofa bed in the lounge was put there in case anyone could'nt manage the stairs, during the night.... there is also a very comfortable M&S tub chair in the lounge & upstairs. Whilst speaking to Alan, our really great house manager, your husband could only praise the property, had we known the towel situation this would have beed resolved by Jess, our housekeeper ....... the bathroom sink is tiny as it gives more space to the small bathroom - there is a heating adjustment on the wall, whjich can heat-up the room temps immediately,, Hollie cottage in my opinion is anything but dark -& always too warm, whenever I am there..... so sorry you were offended by the furniture & lack of heat, but very easy to ask Alan or call any of the three numbers for aid & assistance. we do hoever thank you for your feedback...... bests viv xx Property Owner

“The saving grace was the location; Haltwhistle and the surrounding locations are stunning and it was that alone which encouraged us to stay for some but not the entire week.”

The standard of cleanliness and infrastructure are woeful and the 'owners' should question if they would stay as paying customers in this property. It is by far the very worst holiday rental we have ever stayed in and we question if Sykes quality control or inspect the properties that feature on their website. This property requires significant upgrade, investment and deep cleaning to make it viable as a holiday let.

Thank you so much for your feedback, really not sure what is meant by infrastructure being woeful?? The cottages are deep cleaned monthly & perhaps as we have so many bookings the occasional spiders web is missed, but we are in the middle if a rural area & having stayed ther on many an occasion, I know a web can appear in a matter of hours after cleaning. The outside windows are cleaned weekly, the laundry is cleaned for every visit, the kitchen is white & therefore easily cleaned, dishwasher, washer/drier/ microwave/toaster etc all cleaned - the Oven was replaced at the beginning of the year, the bedding is always immaculate as are the towels... Our housekeeper, Jess, is always on hand & her phone number is readily available on all Sykes communications & in the cottage - she would have popped down in 10 mins if there was a problem...... Alan our caretake is usually ther every otherday & he chatted with yourself on a number of occasions but no problems were ever mentioned. Sykes were not informed & neither was I...... It would have been nice to rectify a situation had we kinown it existed, but we do thajk you for the feedback ... & if youu could enlighted us on the worst of the experience you had, we'd be so very grateful & rectify this. “Loved our stay at Hollie cottage warm and cosy much comfier than expected!”

A very quirky little house with sloping floors in every direction. The only issue is the hot water, there was not enough to fill the bath (which is needed after long walks along the wall) quiet location with a lovely walk along the beck on the door step! A basic little cottage filled our needs for the week would definitely stay again.

“Great location for exploring Hadrian’s Wall.”

Hollie Cottage offers good basic accommodation at a reasonable price. We visited in December - the cottage had what we needed and was warm, with plenty of hot water. We didn’t really cook - found good local pubs and fish & chips, within easy walking distance. Local pubs were friendly and welcoming. Wi-Fi isn’t listed (which we hadn’t realised!) but is available, though not guaranteed. Great to have parking at the property. The owner quickly responded and resolved an issue we had. We would happily return!

“A thoroughly enjoyable week in Hollie Cottage which is lovely warm & spacious house which met our needs.”

The kitchen had ample crockery, cutlery & utensils. The garden was enclosed enough to keep our dogs in & it was good to be able to park within the property rather than on the road. The location is perfect for Haltwhistle Burn which is a delightful walk from the property & the town centre is about 10mins (mostly uphill) walk which had supermarkets & take-aways (try Oceans for the biggest fish & chips ever!). You are also only a short drive to good walking sections of Hadrian's Wall or the old railway line which is now The South Tyne Trail. After booking we realised that WiFi wasn't listed for the property. We found out there was WiFi but it is shared with 2 other properties which was fine when we were the only ones using it, but not good when our neighbours were in. Our only issue all week was the oven, it has previously been noted that the front has been scrubbed so you can't read the settings but the bigger problem was that it doesn't heat above 150c so this really does need replacing. Overall a great week in a very comfortable cottage.

“Repairs and replacements are needed.”

Upstairs is not as bad as downstairs. The bathroom has mold on the walls and taps need replacing. Not sure how old the interior pictures are but some furniture needs replacing. The dining room chairs are wobbly. One in particular has the front legs bent back. Bathroom door sticks. The cupboard in the front bedroom is hard to open. Kitchen tap is broken. We didn't appreciate that in the hallway when we entered there was a dirty mop and bucket and a dirty dustpan and brush hanging on the coat rack. With some paint and new fixtures/furniture this would be a nice little cottage!

Thank you so much for your feedback, Wendy, as soon as we had note of this Alan our hands on magician at Haltwhistle re-screwed the dining chairs - there had been young children in the cottage prior to your visit & I'm guessing they must have been swinging on them. Hopefully the bathroom door is now fixed, the kitchen tap isnt broken, it pulls out on a stainless steel piece of bendy piping - similar to a haidressers tap, but to make life easier to clean. so sorry about the dirty mop & handbrush - that usually fits uder the sink, & the mop we leave out as that is the last piece of cleaning we do the bathroom & kitchen floors & many times when we used to remove the mop, we were inundated with calls as to where the mop was ..... so we leave it out. These cottages are very small & had we a hall cupboard it would be left in it - but sadly there is no room. But thanks so much for your feedback, it is always welcomed .... Bests viv ... Usually if the cottage has been cleaned immediately after the previous visitors have left, it can stand for a few days & then just prior to new people incoming we do another look around, so not sure what happened in this instance, but the cobwebs can appear overnight in the cottages!! I think its just that sort of building that attract spiders - natures natural fly killers .... really not sure about the crockery, but if it is grubby, as it can be if visitors hand wash the dishes, we would always put it in the dishwasher at the beinning of a clean. But we have taken all of your comments on board & will double check ...... Sorry if this spoiled your few days, but we do try very hard to get thinks sparkling..... Bests viv xx Property Owner

“Positives- location for accessing facilities and walks is excellent.”

Also the shower and hot water availability is great. Needs urgent attention - (aware this has been previously commented on) the oven was dirty and the controls unsightly and hard to use. Little off-putting - the garden could be so very pretty and first impressions are vital, so disappointing that the garden is unloved. Also, it would be helpful to have cottage name on the gate for weary travellers arriving in the dark. Ideal - mattress in larger bedroom feels like it needs replacing. Attention to detail (batteries for TV remote control missing and no dishwasher tablets) felt a little lacking. Also the sofa (while practical) is uncomfortable but perhaps many people staying will not sit on it for long. With some love and an update the property could easily be exceptional.

Cannot comment on the dirty oven, as our housekeeper Jess, did the cleaning, usually fastidious........., usually she removes the oven door & cleans it after every use. The controls are pretty simple, as it is from Ikea & they do tend to be very clear, although I noticed a couple of weeks ago the constant cleaning had removed/worn some of the instructions on the hob. The oven door does have a childproof lock - this could have been a potential problem if the file of instructions hadn't been read. we always leave 2 dishwasher tablets in the cupboard under the sink, alongside a fresh sponge & wipe...... perhaps they hadn't been noticed. The cottage name is on the side of the wall above the sidegate, and on the steps at the rear of the house. Mattress is definitely just a couple of years old but very soft. The double bed in the rear bedroom is much firmer. Jess usually checks the TV & other remotes just to ensure they are all ok, perhaps the previous visitors had remved them & put into one of their devices they've brought with them - this has happened many times .... Sofa recently replaced, the original leather one was ripped by a dog & some children, so had to quickly replace with one we already had ..... bed sofa so perfect for those not wanting to use the stairs. The garden - well what can we say, with all the rain it is difficult to keep this in check & Alan who looks after the grounds has been on holiday for 2 months - he's back now & will get on top of it, we've kept the pallet at the bottom of the garden as some people use it to cover the gaps in the hedge for their dogs. ..the cottage was lovely and warm and on surface looked clean..bed was soft but very comftable..we both slept well.. the next morning tried using cooker omg the oven has hardly any mark to try work what grill or what oven..thankfully found frying pan..there was cute welcome with g+t.... The negatives oven need replaced really...cleaning behind bed in front room was thick with dust..and big rip in lino under recliner chair.... Would we stay again yes...just need little tlc..Good value stay for what we paid..

“Worked well for us.”

Haltwhistle was a great location for walking the wall path with some public transport options as well as a great really helpful local taxi firm. Cottage was really warm, kitchen adequate, shower good with plenty hot water. Carpet in the front bedroom had a series of stains that looked like they had been hastily cleaned up, maybe vomit. A deep clean would help make the bedroom feel more welcoming and pleasant. The whole cottage felt like a deep clean would benefit it, just all a bit cobwebby, grubby in corners etc. The batteries in tv remote were dead, i swapped one out of the freesat remote and they both worked, but they will need replaced soon. Overall we enjoyed our stay, thanks!

“This is a great property for a family such as ours with a dog.”

We loved the rustic and characterful nature of the cottage and the outside area at the back was lovely though our (quite curious and cheeky) dog discovered an escape route just before we left! My 10 year old boys got up early every day (never happens normally) to go paddling and exploring round the burn running at the rear of the property. Haltwhistle is lovely and a 'step back in time' to the point where my husband was seriously looking in the estate agents! There is no Wifi but we saw this as a positive and we bonded really well as a family without tech.

“Hollie Cottage is well located in a beautiful part of the world, the small town of Haltwhistle seemed quite laid back and friendly during our short stay.”

On our arrival in the early evening the Cottage had not been cleaned and the bed linen and towels remained from the previous rental which was not a great start. When we flagged this with our contact the cleaner came round that evening and made up our bed, which was something. The following day the Cottage was prepared for us while we were out. The property is showing it's age somewhat and needs a refresh, there are signs of mould/mildew in front bedroom and bathroom, kitchen cupboard doors were delamination in places. The furniture, was a mix of modern and a little older, but not especially comfortable. A refresh would help. Outdoor space was lovely in the sunshine and the terrace was a pleasant outdoor dining area, we had a warm and sunny few days. Mixed review then. Overall, the Cottage has potential to be a lovely, small get away but in present state is not worth what we paid.

We are very apologetic David, totally our fault for not cleaning, we've had so many mid-week & 2 day breaks, Jess Alan & myself, we all missed it. Jess was down in 20 mins of us finding out with fresh towels & bedding, she cleaned the bedroom & bathroom for you & was down next day to do the whole house. Leaving extra miniatures of G&T & an apology bottle of prosecco. The cottage is very quirky & we thibnk the old & new go side by side but decor is very subjective & we welcome your feedback. It is nearing the end of the season & as such will be refeshed when there is a lull in bookings. We did have a missing slate in both the bedroom at the front & the bathroom. These were replaced prior to your visit, but as it was a rapid turnaround we were unable to address the problem. The lamination is a sign of wearing, which is to be expected in a holiday cottage, but it is very slight. On another side, we wernt informed that you were bringing 2 very large dogs, both of which i believe jumped up at Jess, who is not a wimp, but on both occasions she was quite frightened. There is a note to say that dogs that come to the cottage are to be well behaved ........ As i pointed out earlier - hands-up this was our fault, but I don't believe this has ever happened prior to your visit& please accept our aplolgies. Bests viv xx Property Owner

“The garden is very nice and there was plenty of car parking space - it's a bit tricky to get into from the narrow lane but once I got the hang of it, I was OK.”

Bear in mind this is a two-up, two-down house so is a bit small but it was perfectly suitable for our needs. The best bit was that the TV and DVD player remote controls were easy to use! My only criticism was that I would have appreciated something like a clothes horse to dry washing on. I was happy staying here. Lots of useful information is provided about local attractions and recommendations. The property is about a ten-minute walk from the town centre, which has everything you need, and about 15 minutes' walk from the station, from where you can get trains to Newcastle or Carlisle. There are bus stops less than five minutes' walk away from where you can either catch the 685 Newcastle - Carlisle bus or the AD122 tourist bus to various sites on Hadrian's Wall. Although nothing to do with the house, the bus timetables on the bus stops were out-of-date and I would always recommend checking on the operator's website.

“I booked Hollie cottage for 3 nights for a compassionate visit to a relative who was in palliative care in Haltwhistle, as it had 2 adult double beds.”

We were moved next door 24 hours before arrival to hunter cottage because Hollie was having a new roof. This property had 1 double bed and second bedroom had child’s bunk beds which were so low above my head I couldn’t even sit up. We were awoken at 8am on the first morning by the most horrific drilling which shook the whole cottage. My brother went out and spoke to the roofers who were taking down the chimney on Hollie cottage. They were not even aware that the cottage was being rented, and they had advised the owner not to rent it until works were complete. On top of this there was rubble pouring down the chimney covering the lounge floor. The lady who does the housekeeping came in while we were out and cleared this up. Then we discovered that because of the scaffolding out side there was no signal for the television. So no telly.!! The housekeeper offered to move us next door on Saturday and we could stay a few more days but we were leaving on Sunday morning as we had work commitments in Essex on Monday. When I contacted the owner on Sunday she informed me that the building works were out of her control as they were running 2 weeks late and also that there was a radio in the cottage, which there wasn’t. Well sorry but that’s not my concern or problem. I paid for a cottage with all facilities and I did not get what I paid for. The cottage was extremely shabby and nothing worked properly. Would not recommend this cottage to anyone. . Owner was not at all sorry and never offered any compensation. My family and myself have booked with Sykes before and have always been satisfied but never again with these cottages.

“A great spot for exploring the surrounding area with easy access to A69 for visits to Carlisle , Newcastle and everything in between.”

We visited Housesteads fort , The Sill, Twice Brewed pub and brewery, Lambley Viaduct and just pottered around the area whilst visiting family in the area. Be aware that most of the Hadrians Wall site car parks operate ANPR cameras and you pay when you leave . This wasn't always obvious especially at some of the smaller places. The cottage is at the edge of the village with a short walk into the village which has a Coop, Sainsburys, Boots, several pubs, 2 chippies and a selection of small shops. There is a steep hill from the cottage towards the village but you can walk along the lane behind the cottage and rejoin the main road higher up for a slightly longer walk but gentler incline! The kitchen was well equipped but was missing a frying pan (essential for holiday fry ups). The bathroom is downstairs which wasn't an issue for us but some people may not like it. It has a very powerful shower over the bath but could do with a bathmat as we had to use one of the towels on the floor. The stairs have quite narrow treads but that is the nature of an old cottage. 2 good sized bedrooms with plenty of space to hang clothes. We found the larger bed to be very soft and the double to be very hard but overall we slept OK. There is parking for 2 cars but it is quite a tight turn through the gate so an estate or larger car my find it a bit difficult. We found it easier to drive down the lane at the back of the cottage, turn round at the end and then pull forward through the gate onto the parking area. Overall, we enjoyed our stay but felt that the place could do with a bit of a refresh and some new mattresses as this would definitely make it a place to come back to.

“The property was on the surface clean but when you looked a bit deeper there were problems.”

The oven is old and dirty inside. The cooking pans were dirty. There were cobwebs and mould on the ceiling of the bathroom. The skirting boards needed a wipe down. There was only carpet upstairs and this was stained. The furniture was showing signs of wear and one dining room chair was particularly rickety. The bedding was old.The bed linen had all been through the washing machine many times and so was worn. I'm not sure if the towels were suppose to be grey. The TV was broken although the owner fixed this quickly. The cottage is damp and you can see signs of this on the living room chimney breast. All the above made the property uncomfortable and we decided to leave early. This property was not up to the standard I have come to expect when booking with Sykes.

cobwebs are our cottgae nightmare - we can have the cottage immaculate , two days before occupation, & always allow an early entry, if at all possible ... we are still looking for stain on carpet upstairs, the towels in Hollie cottage are either white & green or white, they are always finished in a dryer & therefore fluffy & we dont own any grey towels which I think are always a mistake, as our charcoal grey bedding for Hollie Cottage. Sometimes we get pilled sheets - especially when using cotton/linens etc - thes will then be used as undersheets.... the ovens are always cleaned & silverfoil is laid for toasting as well as grilling. The oven also has a childproof lock - this seems to fool some people - but it is an Ikea device & very simple xxx Property Owner

“Haltwhistle is a great place to explore Hadrian's Wall.”

However the Cottage is tired and many of the fixtures and fittings were worn, but everything we used worked. The car parking space is a plus point. The towels were old and stained/ holed. Minimal information about the appliances and heating - which we needed to adjust during our stay. No information about recycling and out of date tourist information. Minimal information about pubs/restaurants in the town. No information about walks from the door, eg the lovely walk along the Burn up onto Hadrian's Wall. There is no WiFi - this should be made clear in the description of the property. As said in another comment, the property is up for sale and so unlikely to see any further investment. As a consequence, we would not recommend others to stay.

Thank you for your feedback We did put new towels in the property recently but I understand from my cleaner that an old teatowel with a hole was left out in error. We also leave old towels with a dog bowel placed on top for guests with pets. There is a detailed information pack in the property with guides on how to use the appliances and we mention that you do not need to do any recycling as we do this for you after you leave. There is no 'wifi' advertised at the property and the tourist information office is closed, but there is a lot of up to date information on places to eat and visit in the property. Property Owner

“Property was nice, but is up for sale with a big sign outside.”

On the estate agents website it says that the owners aren’t hands on which is a shame as the property does need a bit more attention to detail. The oven needs upgrading as there wasn’t a proper grill tray and it looks like it has seen better days, in the main bedroom the bedside drawers kept sliding open and although the cottage had been cleaned there were discarded toenail clippings in the lounge and the dining table looked like it had been cleaned with a wet cloth. These were minor issues which didn’t spoil our stay and wasn’t worth raising with the owner especially for what we paid for our 4 night stay, but it seems obvious that it won’t be invested in until it is sold on.

“Property was well located for visiting hadrians wall.”

But their were a few issues we found aswell. Firstly we thought the property was tired and wasn't reflected in the photos which seemed very out of date. Secondly the king size bed had old faded torn stained bedding and un-ironed. Along with this there was a second uncovered mattress put on one of the beds. Which we found out was simply from another property and because they had no were else to put it decided to chuck it onto the king-size bed which lead to a 3 bad night's sleep untell we were told the story and could take it off if we wish. Thirdly when we arrived the property had been cleaned but not to a great standard and we had to hover around ourselves so we felt comfortable (I would like to say we didn't ring the owner that night about the cleaning as we got in late and were tired from a long drive and didn't want to be disturbed).

The cottageis much updated from the original images, where we had a very basic sofa & a really compact 'fold-away' dining system, we donow have a vert large leather eclining chair & a far more comfy leather sofa as well as an extreley comfortable tub chair. Finding it hard to imagine which bedding was on the bed, as we do have a charcoal grey set & a pale grey set?? Not sure how thespare mattress/ex deep bed topper scenario happened, but there are two beds in the property - the rear bedroom has a double bed & the front bedroom a kingsize .... any feedback is always welcome especially laon rrrival then wecan sort it. lyn is amazing - so sorry about the bath being so high, it is the normal bath height, but it is so difficult to do the decision - bath or walkin shower??? Many walkers are looking forward to a bath & yet many just love the luxury of a quick shower. This seemed a good compromise, however we are alwyas looking to change for the better & perhaps a walkin shower would be a good alternative. The property was a good size for the four adults using it. It was all kitted out with everything one required. The location of the property was perfect for walking Hadrian's wall. There were also numerous other spectacular walks locally. The village of Haltwhistle was a small United Nations. We met and spoke to people from various parts of America, Holland, Germany as well as others from various parts of England. I would recommend the Black Bull pub in the centre of the town for a great atmosphere, different types of ales and good pub grub. The village has all the amenities you would require and there are plenty of takeaway shops nearby. The main town of Hexham is only 13 miles away if you require the major store chains, M&S, Waitrose, Tesco, Lidl, Next etc.

HALTWHISTLE

Hexham 17 miles.

Known as the 'Centre of Britain', this small market town is a great place from which to explore both Northumberland and Cumbria. Haltwhistle boasts a good range of shops and pubs - one of which, The Black Bull, is a real ale pub serving good food! There is an excellent leisure centre with heated open air swimming pool and cycle hire in the town, with pony trekking nearby. One of the best preserved stretches of Hadrian's Wall is only a mile to the north with various museums, forts and milecastles to be seen. There is even an ongoing 'dig' at the nearby site of Vindolanda. This truly is magnificent walking, riding and cycling country, with the Pennine Way and various bridleways and cycle routes passing rivers, forests, castles and of course, Hadrian's Wall.
