Description

Wooler 2.7 miles. The Columbine is a traditionally styled, single-storey cottage nestled in the foothills of the Cheviot Hills in the village of Akeld, perfectly suited to friends and families of all ages. Offering a flexible sleeping arrangement and a patio with furniture, this charming retreat is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful Northumberland surroundings.

From the moment you arrive, the handsome stone exterior sets the tone for a stay steeped in character. Step through the pretty front door into a tiled hallway that leads you into the heart of the home. The living/dining room invites you to kick off your shoes and unwind on the plush sofas. Here, soft carpet underfoot, exposed beams overhead, and a large window flooding the space with natural light create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Tasteful artwork adorns the walls, while two inviting sofas and an armchair offer the perfect spot to relax after a day of adventure. Enjoy your evening meals at the attractive dining table while sharing stories of the day’s discoveries; tucked away, there is also a discreet single bed for added flexibility. From here, the kitchen is equipped with all the necessities, certain to entice any budding chefs of the group, including an electric oven and hob, a microwave and a handy washing machine. Rustic wooden fixtures add charm and character to this practical space, making it a delightful spot to prepare hearty meals. Continuing on the ground floor, you will find three bedrooms where you can rest ahead of your excursions; each is bright and carpeted for comfort, with a master double bedroom, a twin room and a single room, all complete with ample storage for your belongings. Completing the interior is a shower room where the rest of the group can get ready for their day, with a walk-in shower, basin and WC. Step outside and savour a glass of something chilled or cup of tea in the last of the summer sun on the patio area with furniture, before wandering into the shared courtyard with additional seating. Beyond, the landscape reveals its own magic—keep watch for the Cheviot goats, shy yet captivating creatures that roam the hills and, on rare occasions, venture close to The Columbine’s gardens, offering a rare and unforgettable glimpse of Northumberland’s untamed beauty. The Columbine is more than a cottage—it’s a destination for memorable experiences. Challenge friends to a lively game of snooker or table football, then take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool to soothe tired muscles after a day of exploring. Planning something truly special? The Columbine offers exceptional wedding and event potential, with trusted contacts for caterers, florists, marquee hire, celebrants and more—everything you need to create an unforgettable occasion. Had a great week with x2 friends, used the pool and sauna easy to use and well maintained.

Dripping taps reported, and shower switch bit sticky so more wasted water, no maintenance till change over day. No problem for us but I guess we're a bit conscious of that these day's. Bar very handy and John helpful. Central location was great to see more country side. Wooler close by and fab local cheese ..

This is a great place to stay -- we are repeat visitors.

All is well maintained and to a high standard. The Bothys are very cosy. Lyanne has been very helpful. The area is really interesting for walks (St Cuthbert's Way runs through nearby Wooler) and battlefields (Flodden and Humbleton Hill -- as in Henry IV Part I -- are very close).

Lovely property - a little dated but that didnt affect the stay.

Kitchen fully stocked with equipment, plenty space around cottage and lovely area. Shower wasn’t the best due to not having much pressure. Quiet surroundings, lovely area to explore and in a great location to explore different locations (wooler, Berwick, Alnwick etc)
