Houghton North Farm Cottage

It's a working farm, expect farming to be going on, including a family of friendly farm yard dogs to great you as you come and go.

The old military road and the Roman wall are all near by. The village has good pubs and regular buses going to Newcastle or Hexham. In short it's an excellent location for exploring this part of Northumberland.

We have just had a lovely relaxing holiday at Houghton North Farm Cottage, and our hosts, Paula and Jeff, couldn't have made us more welcome.

They gave us advise on what there was to see and do locally and further afield. The village is in a rural setting with two pubs and a garage, which sells milk, bread and most provisions. There are lots of walks, with Hadrian's Wall sites close by. The location itself is ideally situated for visiting the coast, Newcastle City Centre, Alnwick and Carlisle, all of which we did. The cottage itself was clean, comfortable and well equipped, and we are looking forward to staying there again.

Friendly hosts with a great western view for sunny evenings outside. Off road parking. Location excellent for surrounding countryside. Local amenities good e. g. Exploring, eating in village. Recommended.

The perfect base for exploring Northumberland, both Hadrian's Wall and the coast, beaches and castles.

The cottage was very clean & comfortable, everything worked well plus the owners were very friendly and welcoming. We will recommend it to others and hope to visit again soon.

We had a wonderful stay in a truly magnificent property.

Everyone on the farm was lovely and we were able to explore a new and spectacular part of the country whilst having a comfortable base to return to each day.

Had a lovely stay at the cottage.

Everything was clean and tidy and the beds were comfortable. Everybody was helpful and friendly including the dogs. it is also well located for most attractions. The only draw back was the poor wifi and phone signal but this is not something that can be rectified by the owner, it is however ideal if you are looking to get out of the rat race for a short while. Thank you for a lovely time.

The cottage, on a working farm, had some beautiful views through the kitchen/dining room full length windows.

Paula and her family were so friendly, informative and helpful. We had a pleasant visit, from the resident horses, thankyou!! A lot of thought had been put into making our stay perfect. There was everything that we needed for a stay home from home.

Excellent cottage.

Nice and quiet with very friendly hosts. Very well equipped kitchen and comfy beds. Exactly what I needed so will be using this place again when I’m in the area. The Wi-Fi is a bit poor and phone signal is quite bad but the hosts did say they would look into the Wi-Fi. I would recommend this cottage to anyone wanting peace and quiet.

Excellent accommodation.

Owners very helpful. Only problem, gates were all difficult to open and close. Good food at The Swan just down the road. Good walking from the door. Efficient bus service to Newcastle and Hexham runs past the door.

A very enjoyable stay.

The cottage was spacious and clean and all the basic essentials that we needed for our stay had been left for us. The owners were very friendly. The location was particularly attractive, being in the countryside and near to the attractions of Northumberland, but also only a few minutes away from Newcastle.

The owners were very welcoming & accommodating & available to deal with any problems.

On REQUEST they kindly showed us around part of the working farm & introduced us to some of the animals. The cottage was clean, comfortable & cleaning produts - eg washing up liquid & hand-wash, & bath towels were provided. Car parking was near the cottage in the farm yard. An absolutely wonderful cottage with lovely owners. Thank you for a great stay.

Very clean and well provided.

The concerns we had were that the property lacked character with bare floors, bare walls and inadequate lighting. The beds were uncomfortable. There was a fair bit of noise from the road next to the cottage.

Loved the cottage, especially the wall of windows and bi-fold doors in the kitchen giving us such a lovely view. Added treats were the family of sparrows under the eves and the beautiful skies at sunset. The cottage is so we'll placed to explore the Tyne Valley and Newcastle. It ticked all the boxes for us.

A second really comfortable stay at Houghton North Farm: the cottage is spacious with all the comforts of home and Paula is a very accommodating hostess.

Heddon-on-the-Wall is a brilliant location for ease of access to the many attractions of Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the East Coast.

Great location and venue, very modern and clean, and a few farm animals to see and pet!

We stayed here last year for our annual pilgrimage to the NE.

It is conveniently situated - The Wall, Newcastle, the coast and The Cheviot region are easily reached - this year, not quite so easy because of a plethora of roadworks and much heavier traffic than usual. Heddon is a pleasant village with a couple of pubs if you fancy eating out. The cottage is reasonably equipped with basic necessities but I would have liked more crockery - especially mugs and bowls, cutlery and oven dishes. Even for two of us, the dishwasher had to go on more than was actually necessary.

Nicely converted cottage, views from the kitchen over the garden are particularly enjoyable.

Lots of wildlife to watch: swallows, goldfinches an bluetits feeding on thistle seeds, rabbits after vegetable leaves. Place was spotless and our hostess not only provided lovely fluffy towels and top-quality loo paper and kitchen roll, but also lent us Tupperware for picnics, which we'd forgotten to bring. Only slight drawback was the cars' paintwork and glass getting heavily splattered with birds' calling-cards, as the parking is in the open farmyard - but on the upside, it's secure and off-road. Lots to see and do in the area; good restaurants in Hexham (unfortunately the Wylam restaurant we were interested in was so popular, we couldn't even get a booking). Would recommend for a leisurely, outdoorsy, non-beach holiday.

The hosts couldn't have been nicer.

The area is handy for the coast which we wanted more than anything. Thoroughly enjoyed our time.

only fault in this cottage is the plumbing.

Water pressure is great but drainage could do with being looked at it was very slow indeed which was a bind in such a small sink and also a distinct drainage smell in the room with the shower. patio at the back could also do with a bit of a tidy. all told fair for the price charged.

In the countryside, but still very near to Newcastle.

Good proximity to Roman settlements on Hadrian’s Wall. A great place to stay - clean, friendly and helpful people, roomy for 4 people, good place to relax, all necessary facilities. Highly recommended.

Scary getting out in traffic at times.

Perhaps a mirror on the building opposite would help but the welcome from the host and hostess was outstanding. Lovely place to relax after a busy day in Northumberland. Would love to return again in the future.

The cottage is an excellent size and extremely suitable for a family of four.

I was especially pleased with the size of the kitchen/diner and the range of amenities available, especially the full sized fridge/freezer as I bring a lot of home-cooked frozen meals to supplement eating out, and the freezer is easily large enough to store food for a week or two. Our hostess was very friendly, welcoming nd accommodating and we could really find no fault with the property.

The cottage was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed our stay there.

Heddon is in a good position to explore Northumberland. Hadrian's Wall is very near. The wonderful coast with it's splendid beaches and castles is easily accessible. The Cheviot Hills are enticing and if you feel like a bit of retail therapy, Newcastle and the Metro Centre are just down the road. Hexham and Corbridge are on the doorstep and are interesting places for a quick visit.

Perfect position for exploring the area.

The cottage was more spacious than we expected.

The kitchen with the whole width glass window which opens up wide in the middle was a great benefit in Covid-19 times - we could open it and entertain family members living nearby while allowing in plenty of air. It also offers an excellent view over the fields. Although there is a hostel on the farm, the cottage is quite private and secluded from it. Parking is secure and easy. Mrs Lawes is a friendly and helpful host, but respectful of occupants' privacy. The cottage had been stripped of many contents on account of the Pandemic, so internal decoration was minimal and kitchen utensils, cutlery, etc. just enough for the number of possible occupants (four), but Mrs Lawes said that we could ask for things put in storage if we needed more. Heddon is a convenient base for exploring Northumberland (the A1 is only about 10 minutes easy drive away) - unless you are walking the wall you will probably need transport, but there are reasonable bus services to Newcastle, Hexham and Carlisle. Although our stay was in summer, the central heating is effective (needed sometimes even in August) and there is wood-burning stove. We would certainly stay there again.

Fabulous cottage, the photographs don’t do it justice.

Great location. The owners added some lovely touches to make out family Christmas gathering special, including putting a decorated Christmas Tree up for our arrival. We will definitely be visiting again.

In our opinion the property was even better than it looked on your website.

We were a party of four and I don't think we could have stayed in a better cottage. It was very warm and comfortable and our hostess was perfect. She was always available to help if we needed to ask something, but never obtrusive, and even came to my rescue with some de-icer for the car when we were setting off to go home. If anyone is looking for a cottage for four to explore the area look no further just book it, you won't be disappointed. 15 out of 10 wonderful stay. Thank you.

It is extremely clean, comfortable and one of The best equipped cottages we have stayed in. Generous bedrooms with fantastic comfortable bed (Queen size!) the Hosts are very welcoming, and the village has 2 good pubs, garage and well stocked shop. An ideal stay for exploring countryside, with regular buses into Newcastle Upon Tyne an added Bonus.

Well equipped with modern appliances, tv in all beds, lounge and kitchen.

Comfortable beds, good towels. Shower and bathroom facilities good. Parking some way from the cottage. No washing line to dry clothes Wi Fi does not connect with the internet, due to poor signal

Beautiful interesting property located within a farm.

Friendly jovial owner who was also helpful. Only one minor criticism, and it may not be of relevance to other guests, a grab handle in the family bath would be useful. All other aspects made this a truly memorable holiday. So much to see and do within the area. Well recommended.

The cottage was more spacious than we thought it would be. It was lovely being close to our family and being able to invite them over for dinner etc.

It was a nice holiday although we rented a car to go certain places but we couldn't go because half of our holiday was snowy and we are not experienced to drive in snow but overall it was good.

The cottage is in a superb location in the heart of the countryside, yet only a 15 minute drive to the centre of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

Heddon-on-the-Wall was perfect for us: the village being only a 10 minute walk from Houghton North Farm. We used the shop at the Shell garage, the two pubs (delicious meals at The Swan) and the Dingle Dell Deli/Tea Room for a tasty breakfast one morning. The accommodation was extremely comfortable, spacious and well equipped giving us more than we needed for our stay.

Although the information was that it did not have WiFi, it did have it which was useful.

The cottage was very well appointed and in a good location.

internet would be good to the cottage but you can I believe get it in the near by bunkhouse, /Mr & Mrs Laws are very nice people and excellent host's the cottage is in very good order and has every thing you need and fresh milk in the fridge and a bowl of apples on the table when you arrive is a very nice touch.

A lovely cottage, so modern inside and so well equipped.

The location is great for seeing the many sights of Northumberland and Tyneside just so long as you are careful turning into and out of the farm gate! And the owners were so friendly and helpful. We'd certainly recommend it.
