“We stayed for two nights as two families (four adults and four children aged 9, 9, 5, and 4) and had a lovely time.”

The property was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. It was very well equipped, with everything we needed for preparing dinners and cooked breakfasts. The only small niggle was the cutlery set — I can’t think of how to describe it other than the kind where the handles and heads are “clipped” together — should be permanently but a few pieces were very loose. Otherwise, everything we could have wanted was provided. The view of Bamburgh Castle was beautiful, and the location is ...

The view of Bamburgh Castle was beautiful, and the location is excellent — less than a five-minute drive to the castle and beach. Definitely walkable for grown-ups, though we opted for the car rather than testing the stamina (or patience!) of the little ones. Overall, a lovely stay in a well-presented property. We’d happily return and would recommend it to families looking for a comfortable base near Bamburgh.

Castle View Lodges

Castle View Lodges consists of a charming and stylish selection of two lodges resting on the peaceful outskirts of Bamburgh. Located in a former stone quarry, which is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (Brada Hill SSSI), this collection offers bright, contemporary interiors, open-plan living, and scenic views, making it a lovely base for families, couples, and groups of friends. The surroundings enjoy rolling countryside, where you can explore the dramatic Bamburgh Castle, stroll along sandy beaches, or enjoy stargazing in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Outside these abodes is a decking area, where you can take a refreshing drink and simply enjoy the stunning rolling country views out towards the centre of Bamburgh and its historic castle.

Northumberland’s coastal landscape offers something for everyone, from couples and heritage enthusiasts to nature lovers and those seeking a dark skies experience. Treat your loved ones to a meal out at nearby eateries such as The Potted Lobster, offering fresh seafood and a relaxed coastal setting, or The Castle Inn for traditional pub fare with a modern twist in a cosy atmosphere. Make the most of your location by exploring the Grace Darling Museum and the sweeping sands of Ross Back Sands, whether it’s scenic coastal walks, historic landmarks, or cultural experiences. While you're in the area, take a drive towards the famous Bamburgh Castle, a Grade I listed building with audio tours of the state rooms, showcasing a wealth of history. This dramatic and iconic landmark, perched on a rocky plateau, also hosts events such as ghost tours, outdoor cinema nights, and dragon hunts, and is dog-friendly. Due to your close proximity to the coast, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to spend your afternoons on the lovely sandy beaches sunbathing, swimming in the clear waters, or getting involved with a variety of watersports, including surfing. The area is part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with beaches backed by sand dunes and views stretching across to Holy Island, Lindisfarne, and the Farne Islands, perfect for walkers, nature lovers, and bird watchers. Ross Back Sands, a remote and peaceful beach nearby, is popular with naturists seeking a quiet, scenic spot to unwind. With sweeping views of Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle, its unspoilt setting and sense of seclusion make it ideal for those looking to enjoy nature in a relaxed, clothing-optional environment. Bamburgh itself is steeped in history, once the royal capital of Northumbria. Visitors can explore the Grace Darling Museum, dedicated to the Victorian heroine, and the Bamburgh Ossuary beneath St Aidan’s Church, which holds remains dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries.

The village also offers charming local spots such as cafés and the iconic red phone box, all set against the stunning backdrop of the castle. Be sure to stop by the Walled Garden Café, a pet-friendly spot where you can enjoy homemade cakes, light lunches, and a tranquil setting surrounded by beautifully restored gardens. Take a swing at Bamburgh Castle Golf Club, one of the most scenic courses in Britain, with views of the Cheviots, the sea, and the castle itself. With nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed offering regular train services to Edinburgh, it’s also an excellent base for day trips further afield.

About the location

BAMBURGH

Seahouses 3.5 miles; Beadnell 5.1 miles; Alnwick 16.9 miles.

The village’s sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic fortress - Bamburgh Castle - make Bamburgh one of Northumberland’s major visitor attractions. The castle can be seen for miles and dominates this part of the county’s coastline. Today it remains home to the family of the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, and is open to the public on a daily basis. Although overshadowed by the great castle, Bamburgh village is picturesque with neat grey stone cottages facing a manicured village green. There are excellent pubs, hotels with restaurants and a small selection of village shops. There are golf courses in Bamburgh and nearby Seahouses, and within easy reach are more wide sandy beaches, lovely fishing villages, stunning castles and coastal islands to explore along the dramatic Heritage Coast. There are numerous other attractions also a short drive away, including the famous Alnwick Castle and Gardens and the historic walled border town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A superb base for exploring Northumberland.
