About the location

HORSLEY

Wylam 2 miles; Heddon-on-the-Wall 3 miles; Corbridge 7 miles; Newcastle upon Tyne 8 miles; Hexham 12 miles.

The parish of Horsley is situated in one of the most scenic parts of east Tynedale, and forms part of a World Heritage Site. The Hadrian’s Wall long distance path is situated one mile north of the village of Horsley and is connected by existing rights of way, one of which travels through Horsley Wood, a woodland dating to the medieval period. Horsley village is steeped in history, and many of the buildings have strong architectural features and are of great historical significance, while Horsley is close to the village of Wylam, the birthplace of George Stephenson, one of the early pioneers of the railway industry. Along the road is Heddon-on-the-Wall which sits on the line of the old Hadrian’s Wall, still visible at the edge of the village, and the lovely town of Corbridge, which has history dating back to Roman times, is also nearby. Just a little further on is the Tyne Valley town of Hexham with its abbey, old gaol and old town centre. The vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne with its many pubs, shops, eateries, museums and other attractions is within driving distance and has something for everyone. Horsley is an ideal base for exploring this part of Northumberland.
