“'Iona' was an exceptionally beautiful house, with lots of historical interest, full of antique furniture, and yet supplied with modern conveniences!”
We all loved it, and my teenage son is already asking to return another year. (I think he enjoyed the luxury of a huge bed and a second television set!)
There is plentiful parking outside and a parking permit is provided for the duration of your stay. I should add that we didn't feel the need to use our car at all while we were in Berwick-upon-Tweed: we walked around the local area and otherwise used trains and buses, which were much more frequent than where we live. (NB I would very strongly recommend bus rather than car for Lindisfarne! The car park there was jam-packed when we visited mid-week - and the bus timetable is specially adapted to fit in with the tides.)
Berwick itself was a great place to stay, and although it has some of the mainstream supermarkets (Aldi, Morrison's, etc), it also has a number of charming, independent shops. We loved 'The Green Shop', which specialises in organic/fairtrade goods, and the fabulous 'Slightly Foxed' bookshop, while the things for sale in Jennie's Wool Studio made me wish I knitted more ...
The owners are lovely and very helpful - they answered my queries rapidly, and provided milk, tea, coffee and biscuits in the property.
Dear Helen
Thank-you so very much for your lovely feedback regarding both our property, Iona, and Berwick itself. I agree Berwick is a great place to stay with so much on offer for visitors. The Independent shops offer an eclectic mix of interesting crafts, art and antique shops to name but a few; the Green shop is truly amazing and the bookshop as you mention. Jennie's wool studio is definitely worth a visit or two for those who enjoy woolen crafts.
Delighted your teenage son enjoyed his stay too and we hope you do return soon.
