“We stay in the Alnwick area every year and, when it’s just the two of us (adult children free!”

), West End Cottage is our default location, when it is just the two of us and our two spaniels. This was our fourth stay at West End Cottage (first time in February 2029) and it is the perfect getaway. A cosy, clean cottage, perfectly equipped and a fantastic secure garden for the dogs. The ‘welcome’ cake was delicious and the cottage was carefully prepared ahead of our revival. The location is excellent for visiting the surrounding area and well served by the local amenities. “This was a lovely cottage, perfect for my husband an myself with our two small dogs.”

The kitchen was really well equipped and the welcome home made cake that had been left for us was delicious. The garden was fully secure, which was great for the dogs, and very pretty and immaculately kept. The cottage is in a lovely position, with just a short walk to two pubs (both dog friendly and serving food) and the village shop.

“The owners of this cottage made us feel welcome from the second we walked through the door.”

From lovely touches to make our dog feel welcome at the property rather than simply tolerated (blankets, bowls and tennis balls), to the little Easter decorations, chocolates and homemade cakes they’d left, every detail was considered. The cottage was comfy, very clean, well equipped, and the small kitchen had everything you could possibly need - you wouldn’t have to go out to eat unless you wanted to! Will definitely look out for this cottage again, thank you for making our stay so lovely!

“A very cosy and comfortable cottage!”

It was our third weekend stay at the cottage, it happened to be Valentine's weekend, which was coincidental to our booking not the reason, there were Red Roses, a Valentine themed homemade cake and chocolates, the owners obviously take so much care to make sure their guests have the best experience. We've booked the cottage for a week in July and look forward to making the most of the delightful garden.

“West End Cottage is a lovely warm and cosy place to stay.”

It has a well equipped kitchen and a perfect little scullery at the back where we stored most of our food. The furniture is comfy and there is a very good sized garden and ample car parking space. Also a good smart TV. Although it is on a minor road there is very little traffic so we ceased to even notice it. There is loads of extremely useful information about the local area and good places to visit. There was also a wonderful chocolate cake to welcome us and lots of goodies including milk and other essentials. I would thoroughly recommend it as place for 2 people to stay, relax and enjoy the very lovely county of Northumberland.

Great enclosed garden for our dog. Well stocked with everything you need including herbs and spices and those things you wouldn't usually take to cook on holiday. The hosts provided a lovely chocolate cake and welcome pack which was very well received. We enjoyed a peaceful break in a very homely cottage.

“First of all, please do not change your pillows!”

They are wonderfully comfortable and soft - so much so, I took a sneaky peek at the brand (John Lewis) and have ordered a pair for my home. This was our second stay at West End cottage and like before, it didn't disappoint. A delicious welcome pack awaited us, with chocolate butterfly buns and home-made scones. The cottage is incredibly well-equipped. Books, games, ideas on places to visit, and everything you could possibly need for the kitchen (except for a tin opener, which we couldn't find for love nor money!) Hot dogs, which we use as high-value treats for our dogs, don't come with a ring pull! We even had sufficiently cold enough weather to use the log burner. We have booked West End Cottage again for our next stay in November 2026.

“Lovely cosy cottage in great location with beach within walking distance and great base for exploring the area.”

Found cottage to be warm and garden was lovely and secure for dog, also good to have off road parking to side of cottage. Was nice on arrival to discover chocolate cake, milk and welcome pack. Eat at the Dunstanburgh Castle Hotel on three occasions, good food at reasonable prices. Only thing we'd recommend changing is the pillows which seemed a bit soft / saggy. Would definitely recommend/ stay again.

“Excellent location for exploring up and down the lovely Northumberland coast.”

The cottage was cosy, comfortable and very well equipped with everything needed for our week away. The welcome pack & cleaning pack were very welcome indeed… especially the delicious homemade treats! It was nice to be able to sit in the peaceful garden watching all the birds. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to family and friends, although that might mean there wouldn’t be any dates available for us to make a return visit! What a lovely place to stay.

“This is a lovely cottage in a great location to explore the Northeast coast.”

It has a beautiful enclosed garden and off road parking. The owners provided a welcome pack and there was a homemade cake, which was very thoughtful. However our first impressions were not good there was an overwhelming smell of damp dog throughout the cottage with the only bedroom being the worst. The bathroom was also a concern there was black mould around the shower door and a strong smell of urine around the toilet..This was not the start we had been expecting and we were extremely disappointed that the basic standard of care was lacking.

“We have had a lovely two weeks staying at this cosy cottage.”

It is well equipped and very comfortable with everything you need for a home from home including herbs, spices, tea and coffee and a tea cosy! The location is perfect in Embleton: a couple of minutes to the pub, wonderful village store (farm shop) and a 20 minute walk to be on the beach. The garden is delightful and fully enclosed which suited our curious spaniel! With coastal walks all around and the Cheviots a short drive away, this is a great place to stay to enjoy it all. We shall return!

“West End cottage is such a lovely place to stay.”

It has everything you need for such a cosy cottage and the small touches like the vase of flowers, milk in the fridge and home made cakes are very welcoming. The bed is comfy and lighting the fire in the lounge is great on a cool evening. The location is great with the beach being a ten minute walk away and plenty of places to eat and drink nearby. This is our second visit and we have already booked for September.

Great base for touring Northumberland. Cottage is very well equipped - can't think of anything we needed that wasn't provided. Really warm - didn't need to light the fire- the heating was more than sufficient. Lovely pubs which are dog friendly. Would definitely stay again. Just to let you know the bathroom tap is dripping quite badly.

Located about 100 yards from the dunstanburgh hotel and 300 from the greys pub making its location for evening out very good. Pleasant secluded rear garden , small parking for one car off road . Living room and bedroom quite large . Kitchen is small but adequate for 2 . There's a rear porch / utility which is very useful . Bathroom with a lovely big walk in shower . And as a nice welcome pack a superb sponge cake , milk , cookie pack Along with a good mixture of condiments etc. And as noted on an earlier review , the taps don't drip ! We had a really good stay and will happily return .

“Overall, we enjoyed a very comfortable stay at West End Cottage.”

The welcome gift of homemade chocolate buns were delicious. It was lovely to see the log burner was ready to use, but unfortunately, the mild weather didn't really justify its use. Plenty of instructions within the cottage and lots to occupy your time. We particularly enjoyed the 'garden bird watch'. Embleton is just a short walk through to the magnificent Embleton Bay, where sun and sand kept our 2 dogs occupied for many hours. Glorious views across to Dunstanburgh Castle from the beach. A couple of minor points (which didn't detract from our stay), the dripping tap, as mentioned in previous reviews, is still not fixed, resulting in a huge amount of water being wasted. The vacuum cleaner is next to useless, I'm afraid. Apart from those two issues, we would still recommend West End Cottage.

Very well appointed and great facilities. Perfect location and ideal place to explore the surrounding area. Decor is looking a bit tired and could benefit from a touch up. Leaking taps in the kitchen and bathroom, only point out to save the waste of water and expense. Warm and comfortable property with lots of clear instructions and information.

Upon arrival we had been left milk, a cleaning pack, a tea/coffee pack with biscuits, a dog treat for Billy and delicious homemade buns. What a welcome! This is a lovely cottage, perfect for two, in the lovely village of Embleton. Great location to be based out of for visiting local attractions. Large living room and bedroom. Good size bathroom with a lovely hot shower. Well stocked kitchen with plenty of utensils and herbs/spices etc. Much better than most places we've stayed before. Nice secure garden with off road parking, all a 10 minute stroll from the beach. Would happily stay here again and would recommend.

THe only negative for us was it was too mild to have the log burner on, however the settings for the heating, which we couldnt control meant the heating kicked in at 6am ..and was quite noisy ..and shut down late afternoon..which meant the house was a bit chilly...maybe just needs tweaking after the clocks going back

“A beautiful cottage with many provisions and extras that wasn’t expected, including scrummy chocolate cake.”

One small personal issue is that the single chair be replaced with a more comfortable chair as it was hard to get in and out of with it being a rocker but overall would highly recommend the cottage with the lovely enclosed walled garden and we made full use of the woodburner which added a lovely ambience to the lounge on an evening. The village had everything we needed, pubs shops and a beach over the hill and is brilliantly placed for exploring the beautiful coast and towns of the area and most importantly very dog friendly. We were able to go in all the pubs restaurants and cafes and the Dunstan Castle hotel in the village had a separate lounge and restaurant as well as an area in the bar for dogs. This is a game changer when you take your pets on holiday. We will definitely return in the future

“Thought this cottage was really lovely with delightful garden.”

Location was excellent for main local attractions, situated in nice village with good pubs and convenience store. The cottage itself was very well equipped and very comfortable. We were left delicious welcoming gifts! Our only adverse comment is that the bathroom is a little way from the bedroom, especially when you are used to an en-suite - but appreciate there is nothing you can do about that.

“A charming traditional stone building cottage with a lovely garden to enjoy your breakfasts outside - accompanied by a squadron of friendly sparrows.”

Compact galley kitchen with a comprehensive range of equipment. Walk in shower with an amazing pressure - blew the fluff out of my navel with no problem!! Comfy large bed - accepted my 6ft 4 inch height with no problem - being tall I had to be aware of the low doorways in the cottage. The Wi-Fi password is on the rear of the router. Upon our arrival we found a very large strawberry cream cake & bottle of milk in the fridge - bang went my diet! Also a lovely homemade jar of strawberry jam & large box of mixed biscuits / coffee's / tea's etc. On the dining table was a delightful vase of freshly cut flowers from the cottage garden. A note had been left of the ingredients of the cake & the jam for anyone with dietary concerns - which reflects just how thoughtful & kind the owners are. On the kitchen calendar - a note had been left for an RNLI event at Craster - which we thoroughly enjoyed & supported. Coincidentally my partner had very recently played in her steel band supporting the Cullercoats RNLI fund raising event. I have been coming to Northumberland since the 1970s - so much to do & explore. We had a delightful stay at this charming West End Cottage. Many thanks, Claire & David

“We very much enjoyed out stay Much appreciated all the extras and flowers.”

The garden extremely safe for our dog and the birds were a delight to watch. It was good to be in easy reach of shop for morning paper. The beach would be within walking distance for those younger and fitter than us but we drove and found parking easy. We and dog loved our walks there The kitchen is tight but now we know that we can cope in future. A more comfy armchair would be an asset. We will return for sure.

“3 days short break in Embleton, staying for the first time in West End Cottage.”

Ideally situated in the heart of the village just a minute or so from Dunstanburgh Castle Hotel. The cottage is cosy and the bed is comfortable, we slept very well. Log burner was so welcoming along with the lovely homemade chocolate cake and fudge. Ate most of it and took the rest home with us! Have already booked in for a week in the summer at West End Cottage, looking forward to it!

“Excellent cottage, in a quiet village.”

My husband and 2 dogs stayed over New Year. Safe enclosed rear garden, so did not worry about the dogs. Nice touches from the owners, welcome pack, treats for the dogs, even a dog bowl and bed. All aspects of washing catered for e.g washer and dishwasher tablets and liquid and cloths. Very clean, cosy and warm. The only thing you need to bring are extra towels if staying longer than a couple of nights, 2 provided at property. Very good information folders for the property and the area. Highly recommend

Very comfortable once we worked out how to boost the heating, as there were no instructions. Nice big bedroom and comfortable bed. Enclosed garden for dog. Well equipped kitchen. A tumble drier would have been a help. The only drawback was the height of the door lintels. My husband is 6ft 4in and had to remember to duck!

Easy walking to the beautiful beach. Garden was great for our dog. Bed was very comfortable. Plenty of information available. Everything you might need- even a hot water bottle in the bedroom. Only very slight niggle, difficult to lock the back door from the inside. Main gate is difficult to lift and fasten. But we loved it here and intend to come back

The kitchen is small but well equipped but the rest of the accommodation is fantastic, good sized living room and big bedroom with plenty of storage. Good secure outside space, only criticism is that a BBQ would be welcome. Embleton is a beautiful village with a good pub, the hotel and easy access to the coastal path. Highly recommend.

However it could have been a little cleaner,dusty and cobwebs in all the rooms,which we soon sorted and it did not spoil our holiday. The location was perfect for the places we planned to visit.

“A beautiful snug cottage in a lovely village with 1km to beach and short drives north to Beadnell, Seahouses and Bambrugh, south to Craster and Alnmouth and west to Alnwick.”

We used the bus from the village to allow one way walks on the beautiful coast path. The cottage has a good sized enclosed back garden which was great for our dog and off road parking at the side of the cottage. Kitchen was well equipped with a welcome pack of home made cake, home made jam, fresh milk, tea coffee and biscuits and a cleaning pack. Bed was comfortable and cottage had character and lovely wood burner stove. Slight downside is that the shower and toilet are off the kitchen but we got used to that.

The hotel can be fully recommended for its food and dog friendliness as was the cottage. The cake and jam were very welcome and were excellent. It would be helpful if the main gate hinges could be adjusted as lifting the gate to close the bold was awkward.

Great private back garden which is a lovely sun trap. For us we would of liked some comfy garden furniture i.e. rattan to relax on as the table and chair's not really laze in the sun furniture. It was our second visit and we would definitely go back again. It would have been helpful to have instructions on how to use the Nest central heating controls especially in winter and there was no starter pack provided for the stove. Refuse collection timetable needs updating. The vacuum cleaner was not very efficient and cut out after only 5 minutes even though it was fully charged.

“Fantastic cottage - we could live here!”

Lovely to stay here for Christmas. We love the area which is why we chose to stay here. It never fails. Dogs loved the 18 mile beach walks everyday. Just one downside was the heating - it rarely came on and when it did it wasn't warm enough to keep the place warm. We managed to get around this by using the log burner everyday. The cottage uses Nest for heating which we're not familiar with. Maybe we did something wrong which prevented the heating from coming on. Some good advice/instructions regarding the heating would really be beneficial. Otherwise a perfect stay. Thank you

Based in a lovely village, ideally located for visiting all our favourite places in Northumberland easily. Really well equipped, and cosy too. We loved the personal touches like the welcome pack and friendly, helpful information. The pretty village of Embleton is ideally placed for exploring one of the most attractive stretches of Northumberland's Heritage Coastline. A beautiful grassy path runs from the village to neighbouring Craster, alongside the sea and past Dunstanburgh Castle - the largest ruined castle in Northumberland. Embleton itself has a village pub and a local hotel, and there is an excellent range of amenities in nearby Alnwick. The gardens at nearby Howick Hall are open during the summer and are noted for their beauty, whilst Alnwick Castle and Garden are a 'must-see' when visiting the area. For the keen golfer, Dunstanburgh Links Course is about 1 mile away - just one of several excellent courses in the vicinity.
